The Night of The Iguana

by Tennessee Williams

The Night of The Iguana had 3 performances almost 24 years ago (between the 30th of November 2000 and the 2nd of December 2000) at The Magna Carta Theatre

Set during the summer of 1940 on the verandah of a crumbling Mexican inn perched on a jungle covered hill-top over-looking the sea, where Tennessee Williams spent that languid time surrounded by Germans who appeared jubilant about the bombing of London.

To this torrid, primitive waystation come Shannon, a defrocked priest leading a group of American women tourists; Hannah Jelkes, a Nantucket spinster and artist; her aged grandfather; a group of exultant Germans, all of them guests of the hotels formidable lusty proprietor Maxine Faulk. Over one steamy day and a stormy night Shannon confronts the demons of frantic sexuality, religious guilt and emotional confusion as he is torn between the gentle spinster Hannah and the brash rapacious widow Maxine.

The play concerns people on the brink. Maxine and Hannah are on the edge of financial ruin. Shannon is on the edge of emotional sanity. The Ignuana and Nonno are on the edge of death. Charlotte is on the edge of sexual ruin. Judith Felloes is at the end of her tether. And beyond the edge of this rain forest the world is on the edge of war ...
